New Office of Sustainable Energy established

An Office of Sustainable Energy has been established in the Department of Trade, Business and Innovation, to ensure a coordinated approach to energy related matters.

The new office will coordinate energy policy and implementation of the renewables target across government. The office is working on electricity market reforms, developing strategies for advancing the Territory’s target of 50% renewables by 2030, and capturing opportunities for the creation of cheap, reliable, and clean energy.

The office will also develop solar and hydrogen investment attraction strategies for the Territory.

The Territory has the opportunity to be a major energy producer and exporter, with high solar irradiance and gas resources, large tracts of land, a north-south transport corridor to Asia, and interconnection with the east coast gas market through the Northern Gas Pipeline.
